No wonder Hick likes the smoking ban

Don Parsons, MD, co-chair SmokeFree Summit

Kim Marquis’ March 24 article on the proposed statewide smoking ban mentions that some restaurants have complained that Summit County’s smoke-free policy has hurt their business.Curiously, she does not mention that Summit County’s hospitality-based sales tax revenues are substantially up over last year. These increases are higher on a percentage basis than other ski resorts, such as Vail, without smoke-free policies. Also, we hear all the time from restaurants, employees, entertainers, visitors and residents alike how much they appreciate our fresh air.More than 100 economic studies of towns, cities, counties, states and countries have consistently demonstrated that smoke-free policies tend to help the hospitality business. No wonder John Hickenlooper, mayor of Denver and owner of several restaurants, and the Colorado Restaurant Association as well as the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry (the statewide Chamber of Commerce) have come out in favor of the statewide proposal. They recognize that the health of the public and their employees and customers is of vital importance. And they want to improve business everywhere.I hope that Summit County residents and visitors who have enjoyed our smoke-free venues will thank Rep. Gary Lindstrom for his leadership.
