Nordic village on peninsula great idea

Svein Rognerud

I have been reading with delight the articles in the Summit Daily News and the Ten Mile Times related to a Nordic village and multi-use facility proposed for the Frisco Peninsula Recreation Area. This is an excellent idea.

As some of you might remember, about 15-20 years ago, a similar proposal was put forward to the Frisco voters. It was defeated mainly because Frisco voters did not want the added traffic and crowds. At that time, the proposed plan was to build a log building in the vicinity of Main Street and the bike path. The plans had a restaurant/coffee shop, showers, locker rooms, a fitness center, and more. The architect was Dokken-Crow, and several architectural renderings were completed. On the design team was C-skier Bill Koch to assist in the facility planning as well as the proposed 10K lighted cross country ski trail along the bike path. The proposed facility had some of the features the Holmenkollen facility in Oslo, Norway has. I was part of the design team, the electrical engineer, because I had raced and trained at Holmenkollen.

I hope the Frisco voters will approve this facility when the time comes, and, as Mayor Bob Moscatelli said in one of the papers, “I believe it could be the crown jewel recreation facility in the county.” I believe it could be the crown jewel in the country, and a high-altitude training center for Americans and foreign competitors all year round.
