Novotny Memorial Fund benefit upcoming

Daily Staff Writer

Mark your calendars now for the eighth annual Community Party to benefit the John Novotny Memorial Fund for Summit County Medical Emergencies noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at Carter Park in Breckenridge. The party will feature an assortment of food and beverages donated by local restaurants, entertainment by local musicians, a silent and live auction and a variety of children’s entertainment and activities. When longtime Summit County local John Novotny told his friends that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor that would later spread throughout his body, they asked him if they could hold a benefit to help defray the unexpected medical expenses. “Only if the money raised goes to help others, too,” Novotny said. And thus, the John Novotny Memorial Fund for Summit County Medical Emergencies was born. Established in 1997 to address the medical emergency needs of local residents, the organization is working to increase awareness of the programs and continue to raise and distribute funds to people who need a helping hand. To date, the nonprofit organization has distributed tens of thousands of dollars to more than 200 members of the Summit County community. If individuals are interested in volunteering for the benefit or donating an auction item, call M.J. Hoppin at (970) 453-2917. The organization is looking for help with volunteer positions in the auction fundraising, food service and activities.
