NRO rekindles the Romantic period

Kimberly Nicoletti

KEYSTONE – The National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) rekindles the mystery, agitation and vitality of the Romantic period Sunday.

Violinist Karen Strittmatter performs Ernest Chausson’s “Poeme,” a piece beginning with a fragile, mysterious mood and culminating in a passionate frenzy before ending tranquilly.

“It’s more about emotion than form,” Strittmatter said. “It has a tragic feeling to it.”

Strittmatter began playing violin when she was 5 years old, after seeing a violin on “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” and begging her parents for one.

“It was kind of a shock to my parents,” she said, explaining how all of her younger sisters are musicians, despite the fact her parents don’t play a note. Throughout high school, she and her sisters paid for lessons by playing for weddings. “(Violin has) always been my passion. It was never a struggle to practice.”

The concert also features Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 5,” a wild, lively piece that highlights every instrument.

Shostakovich composed the symphony in the late 1930s under Joseph Stalin’s oppressive regime, which resulted in an overt submission to the dictator interwoven with subversive themes. In the third movement, he honors the thousands of victims subjected to labor camps under Stalin’s rule.

Tickets are $17, $22 and $27 and may be purchased by calling (970) 547-3100.
