In this special Sunday morning concert on July 16, at 11 a.m., the musicians of the National Repertory Orchestra will take you on a musical journey through France, Russia and more. Assistant conductor Radu Paponiu will lead the orchestra in this diverse and exciting performance.

From the first few notes of the opening cadenza, Ravel weaves a tale of a nomadic people living a spontaneous, colorful and often very difficult life. Tzigane directly translates as “a Hungarian Gypsy,” referring to the wandering Romani people. The violin’s rhapsodic solo accounts for almost half of the work before inviting the orchestra into this undulating web of vibrant melodies. Bulgarian violinist Yordan Tenev’s beguiling presentation of this work will add to his long list of successful performances since his solo debut with orchestra at age 9.

One of the all-time most influential Russian composers, Rimsky-Korsokov was highly praised for his talent for orchestration and Capriccio Espagnol is the perfect example of his genius. Based on Spanish melodies, this famous orchestral showpiece demonstrates its flair through frequent use of orchestra soloists. Rachmaninoff described it best when he said:

“In Rimsky-Korsakov’s scores there is never the slightest doubt about the ‘meteorological picture’ the music is meant to convey. When there is a snowstorm the flakes seem to dance and drift from the woodwinds and the sound holes of the violins; when the sun is high, all instruments shine with an almost fiery glare; when there is water, the waves ripple and dance audibly through the orchestra. The sound is cool and glassy when he describes a calm winter night with a glittering starlit sky. He was a great master of orchestral sound-painting and one can still learn from him.”

This stellar program also includes Berlioz’s Le Corsaire, the symphonic poem Le Chasseur maudit by Franck, and will feature the 2017 winner of the prestigeous NRO Concerto Competition. For more information visit
