NRO Winter Classics concert Thursday
DILLON – The National Repertory Orchestra kicks off its 2006 season with two events in March before the season gets into full swing in June. The Winter Classics Chamber Concert Thursday features NRO alums Janet Harriman on harp and Karen Becker on piano, and Julie Thorton on flute. The performance will include several works by French composers and begins at 7 p.m. at the Lord of the Mountains Church in Dillon.An event to appease the senses is March 30 at the Breckenridge Fine Art Gallery. Watch local artist Jerry Georgeff paint – an auction later will include a piece he has donated – while harpist Harriman provides some easy listening and jazz background music. Taste Rado restaurant’s appetizers and wine from 6-9 p.m. Musician auditions for the 2006 season are complete as the NRO and conductor Carl Topilow look toward another full schedule of summer performances.The nonprofit organization’s mission is to prepare young musicians ages 18-28 for seats in professional orchestras in the United States and abroad.”The nice thing about the National Repertory Orchestra is the programming includes all the big works for almost all instruments,” Harriman said. “The repertory they do is massive.”Harriman attended the National Repertory Orchestra as a student musician in 1987, its first year in Summit County. She recently returned to Summit County to act as music director at the Lake Dillon Theatre.
