James A. Beltzer

March 27, 1944 – July 25, 2014

James A. Beltzer, known to friends and family as “Jim,” died peacefully in his home in Silverthorne, Colorado, on July 25, 2014, at the age of 70.

Jim was born March 27, 1944, in Seattle, Washington, to James and Bernice Beltzer. He was raised in Nebraska, where he graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1962 and the University of Nebraska in 1966 with a degree in business administration. He was a multiple letterman in track, holding the UNL shot put record for a number of years, and a proud member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Jim earned a law degree with distinction from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1969.

After graduating from law school, Jim joined a law firm in Grand Island now known as Leininger, Smith, Johnson, Baack, Placzek & Allen, where he was a partner for approximately 20 years. He then moved to San Francisco and was trial counsel for a boutique law firm. After a period of retirement, Jim opened a practice in Silverthorne. During his legal career, Jim was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Board of Trial Advocates and the International Society of Barristers.

Jim was always an engaged and committed member in each of the communities in which he lived. Among other things, Jim served on the boards of the Saint Francis Hospital and Goodwill Industries in Grand Island, was vice chairman of the Silverthorne Economic Development Advisory Committee and volunteered at the elementary and high schools in Silverthorne.

Jim had many interests, including hunting, fishing, sports, traveling, music and art.

He was a die-hard Democrat and always loved a good political debate with friends. Above all, Jim embraced life and enjoyed people. He could often be found hunting with his dog, George, baking a good loaf of bread, reading a new book, throwing a dinner party or traveling with his wife, children and grandchildren. He led a rich life and touched, and was touched by, the many people with whom he had the pleasure of knowing.

Jim is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Carolyn; daughter Stephanie and husband Matt (of Denver, Colorado), with four children, Abby, Liam, Charlie and Reese; son Chris and wife Jo (of Anchorage, Alaska), with three children, Emma, Jack and Henry; brother Stephen Beltzer (of Grand Island); sister Mary Beltzer (of Sargent, Nebraska); and brother John Beltzer and wife Machaela Beltzer (of Claytonia, Nebraska).

In celebration of Jim’s life, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks, 2929 Golden Eagle Rd., Silverthorne, CO 80498. For more information or to let the Beltzer family know if you plan to attend the service, please email

Any memorials may be given to the Stuhr Museum, Grand Island, Nebraska.
