August 14, 1955 – October 22, 2024

Susan Anne (Suzi) Lazo was born on August 14, 1955, and passed away on October 22, 2024. The third of four siblings, Suzi was born in Denver to Carol and Kent Lazo and grew up in Denver, Cincinnati, Houston and England, where she graduated from the American School in London. She went to college at CSU Fort Collins, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

After college, Suzi spent several years in Breckenridge (where her parents and two siblings had settled) and Alma, working mostly in restaurants, especially as the manager of The Maggie at the base of Peak 9 and at Silverheels where Al-Mart now stands. Fulfilling a long-time ambition, she returned to college at Mesa State in Grand Junction to complete a BS in nursing. She then worked as a neuro nurse at St. Mary’s in Grand Junction for some years before marrying Dave Newkirk and moving back to Breckenridge, to raise her daughter Liz and her son Tommy.

During her many years in Breckenridge, Suzi was actively involved in the community, volunteering at the library, the county animal shelter, the Community Care Clinic, the ambulance service, and with the Red White and Blue Fire Department. She also had a passion for education and loved tutoring ESL students and supporting Breckenridge Elementary. Suzi also sat on the board of Father Dyer United Methodist Church, and participated in many medical mission trips to Guatemala and Haiti. She was also a horseback rider and a zealous softball player.

Seeking a quieter lifestyle, Suzi purchased a small acreage and cabin in Fairplay where she dedicated her time to renovating her new home and volunteering at the Far View Horse Rescue located just down the road. An avid Liverpool Football Club fan since high school, Suzi could always be found catching games on TV (no matter what time) and cheering her team on. She was there in person to see Liverpool win a “friendly” match in Philadelphia last summer. She also loved to read mysteries, was politically engaged, and was passionate about environmental issues.

Suzi’s philanthropic spirit, passion for people and animals, and knack for tackling projects, no matter how daunting, will be deeply missed by her family and community. A service for Suzi will be held at the Far View Horse Rescue on Friday June, 20, 2025, at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Suzi’s name to Far View Horse Rescue, where she especially loved working with the burros.
