Obituary: Anne McDaniel Stonington
Anne McDaniel Stonington
November 18, 1925 – January 31, 2017
Anne McDaniel Stonington, 91, was a force of nature. A born leader, she rose to the top of a long list of community organizations and contributed in innumerable ways to each community where she lived. She passed away, surrounded by family, at her home in Denver on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. Born on November 18, 1925, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, Anne was a gifted musician with a deep love of classical music and opera, who won many distinguished awards in the field of piano music. She attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in piano performance. Anne went on to live in Abilene, Texas, where she raised her three daughters. There she was active in numerous civic and cultural organizations, including the Junior League, the Philharmonic Guild, St. Paul Methodist Church, and many others.
Anne moved to Breckenridge, Colorado, in 1976, where she found community in the Father Dyer Methodist Church. This was also where she met her second husband and the love of her life, the late Dr. Oliver “Stony” Stonington, whom she married on September 23, 1984. Anne was an active member of the Breckenridge community and was a patron and long-time board member of the well-known Breckenridge Music Festival and the Summit Foundation. She lived in Breckenridge for 31 years, where she skied, hiked, played tennis, and golfed almost daily before moving to Denver in 2007. As she moves on to her next adventures, she leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and music that will live on through her many friends across Colorado and beyond.
In Denver, she became an active member of the progressive Christ Church United Methodist, of PEO, and of the Residents’ Association at ParkPlace, where she lived.
She was also a supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and had a granddaughter afflicted with the disease.
Above all else, Anne was a pillar of strength for her large and loving family, which she cherished. She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Stony, of Denver and Breckenridge, CO.
Surviving include her daughters, Kathleen (Michael) Murphy Beatty of Denver, Nancy (Mark) Murphy-Rutherford of Vashon Island, WA, and Karen (Keller) Murphy of Sandpoint, ID; grandchildren Erin, Piper, Hannah, Kate, Alex, and Anaca; and two great-grandsons. Also surviving are her wonderful Stonington family Emily (Chase) Stonington, Pete (Mary) Stonington, Gordon (Liz) Stonington, Jani (Kathy) Stonington-Valentine, and David (Louise) Stonington; grandchildren Daniel, Joel, Ian, Scott, Natalie, Jean-Luc, and Megan; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Breckenridge Music Festival or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
