Gordon Vance McKee of Loveland died of heart failure Thursday at Pathways Hospice McKee. He was 84 years old.

Gordon was born August 17, 1924 in Denver to Leslie Gordon McKee and Madge Null VanCamp McKee.

Gordon graduated from East High School in 1942 in Denver. He joined the Navy in 1943 and retired in 1964. He was a Flight Engineer during WWII on Patrol Rescue Planes. During the Korean War and the Vietnam War he was an aircraft mechanic. He had numerous duty stations before retiring in 1964 as a chief aircraft mechanic at which time he returned to Denver. Gordon worked at several jobs before moving to Loveland in 1971. He saw the need for an oxygen company and started and ran Loveland Oxygen from 1974 until his retirement in 1976. It was the first oxygen company in Loveland. It still goes on today under another name.

Gordon married Shirley Mae Strang August 10, 1983 in Loveland. He was married to June E. Hanna in September 1947 and divorced in 1953. He married Delores H. Billy in 1957 and they were divorced in 1962.

Upon his return from the Navy he could once again go to his family cabin in Frisco, on Bills Ranch. Gordon always felt at peace and that being on his property he really was in “Paradise.” He truly loved the mountains.

Gordon’s other love was old cars. He rebuilt a 1940 Chevy from the ground up. Taking it to car shows he found to be great fun. He also belonged to the Rocky Mountain Plymouth Club and enjoyed driving his 1950 Plymouth Suburban to shows and club meetings.

He is survived by his wife Shirley; four daughters: Linda Baker husband Trip of Colleyville, TX; Kathleen Berger of Denver; Madge Ann Crux and husband Julian of Bellflower, CA; Deborah Hughes and husband Jim of San Clemente, CA; two step-sons, Robert Strang and wife Vanessa of Altoona, PA, and Brian Strang and wife Debra of Charleston, S.C. He has seven grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother Madge Null VanCamp McKee in 1949 and his father Leslie Gordon McKee in 1979.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Viegut Funeral Home with a reception following the services in the Viegut Reception Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Gordon’s honor to the American Heart Association or Volunteers of America in care of Viegut Funeral Home, 1616 N. Lincoln, Loveland, CO 80538.
