Thomas Dee Abernathy

April 20, 1947 – April 2, 2019

Longtime Breckenridge resident Thomas Dee Abernathy passed away on April 2 at his second home in Wilsonville, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents Myra and Denver, his twin Tim, as well as sisters Kathy, Joanne and Patricia. He is survived by his wife Gretchen, their children Cameron and Polly, sister Barbara and brother Todd, as well as his grandchildren Max and Audrey and numerous nephews and nieces.

Thom was born April 20, 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri, and a heart attack took him April 2 of this year in Wilsonville. He graduated from Pattonville High School and attended Mizzou until Colorado pulled him west in the ’60s.

“Abner,” as he was known, was a gifted craftsman. He built or remodeled many residences in the Breckenridge area, and when he relocated to Nebraska, he took gardening and preserving food to new heights.

He was a thoughtful, kind, stubborn, intelligent man who loved to laugh. Thom’s generosity with his time and talents knew no bounds. He hunted and fished; he served on the town council that replaced the boardwalks on Main Street with sidewalks.

A celebration of his life will be held at Carter Park in Breckenridge on April 20, 4-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in his name.
