Obituary: Virginia McWeeney dies Dec. 9 in Massachusetts

Virginia L. (Shea) McWeeney, 86, wife of Leo F. McWeeney (deceased) passed away of natural causes in the comfort of her home in Westport, Mass., on Dec. 9. She had four children, Mary, Leo, Susan and Ann, and is survived by her three daughters and three grandchildren, locally, Shannon Mitchell. Virginia was proud of her 50-year-long career as a registered nurse, beginning as a nurse cadet during WWII, and trained in Red Cross polio and whooping cough clinics. She also trained in NYC at Sloane/Kettering where she was Babe Ruth’s nurse during his final days. She was a devoted public health nurse.

Her career included working as an RN at Woonsocket Hospital, Blackstone Valley Nursing Home, The Visiting Nurse Service and Rhode Island Association for Retarded Citizens. In retirement she enjoyed her home friends, grandchildren and pets. She visited her granddaughter in Summit County many times each year. Virginia was known by the local children as “Grammy Ginny.” A private gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible donations in her name may be made to:
