Longtime Summit man dies at 63

William V. Smith, a longtime Summit County resident known to many as Smitty, died in Crawford Oct. 27, two days before his 63rd birthday.

A gathering in honor of his life is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Friday at the Summit County Elks Lodge #2561 in Silverthorne.

Smith was born on Oct. 29, 1940 to Naomi and David Elmer in Brownsville, Texas. He spent his childhood in Miami Springs, Fla., and graduated from Hialeah Senior High School.

He lived in Summit County for the past 23 years.

Smith married Mary Barnett on Aug. 8, 1988 in Cherry Creek. He owned and operated a lounge and restaurant called the Upstairs Lounge, was a member of the Summit County Elks and was an avid golfer and athlete.

Survivors include his wife Mary, of Silverthorne; son Ty Smith of Florida; daughter Haley of Florida; sisters Betty Jo Ogilvie of Melbourne, Fla., and Kathy Delierc and her husband, Bob, of Islamogorda, Fla; four nieces and seven grandnieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece.
