On the Clock: Brian Pence

Summit Daily/Reid WilliamsBrian Pence, a Breckenridge wastewater operator for 22 years, was recently recognized at the top of his field in the state.

Like most Summit County residents, Brian Pence originally came here 26 years ago to ski; however, he hasn’t been on the mountain in a couple of years for two great little reasons.Their names are Annie and Alexander, Pence’s two young children.”Having kids is just the coolest thing in the world,” Pence said. “I hate that I waited so long in life to have them.”He said he intends to get back in his skis in March when Annie turns 3 and can join him on the slopes. Even with devoting so much energy to his family, Pence managed to win the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association’s Operator of the Year award for the state of Colorado. His facility was also awarded second place in the Environmental Protection Agency’s national awards this year.

What do you like about your job?”I enjoy helping the environment. We’re the original recycler – we recycle water. That’s definitely the coolest part about what I do.” What are the job’s challenges?

“Keeping everything running is a challenge. Things can break down or wear out. Keeping the process running smoothly is the job’s biggest challenge.”What brought you to Summit County?”Skiing. I’ve been skiing for 30 years.

What do you do when you’re not working?”Kayak, bicycle. I have a sailboat. Ice climb. I’ve tried just about everything.”What’s something your co-workers might not know about you?”I want to be a farmer and raise animals. I grew up around that, and I miss it. I want my kids to experience that. It’s very quiet and laid back.”
