Stylist Jules Santen knows her clients so well that she could do their hair with her eyes closed. “(Hair styles) are usually nothing fancy up here,” Santen said. Most clients are happy “as long as it fits in a ponytail.” Santen said the funkier hairstyles found in big cities aren’t as prevalent in the High Country, where people generally ask for more low maintenance cuts.Santen, who works at Zoe’s Hair Design in Breckenridge, has been doing hair for nearly a decade, and she said it’s all she’s ever really wanted to do.”My mom was a hairdresser,” Santen said. “They say it runs in your blood, and I love it.”

What do you like best about your job?”I enjoy working with fun people and the flexibility of the job.”What do you do when you’re not working?”I like rafting, horseback riding and camping. It’s hard to find time to ski when you work a 9:30 (a.m.) to 5 (p.m.) job, but I do like to telemark. I also like to snowshoe and go snowmobiling.”

What brought you to Summit County?”I quit school and came out to visit my stepbrother. I had nothing tying me back, so I stayed.”What’s something people might be surprised to know about you?”I’m the local baby-sitter. From doing hair, I’ve met a lot of families, so (taking care of kids) is something I do on the side. I love it. It makes me feel good.”
