Open space protection of Smith Ranch is a groundless claim

Bonnie Guthri - Silverthorne

Opposing a grocery store on the Smith Ranch for the purpose of protecting “open space” has no basis in reality.

We all came here because of the natural beauty of this area. But the open spaces that attracted us are the majestic mountains and the 70 percent of Summit County that is national forest.

We did not come here because of a privately owned meadow facing a state highway. The “open space” argument becomes even less sustainable when considering that the Smith Ranch originally included all the land which is now the Willowbrook and Blue River Ranch neighborhoods.

In addition, the proposed store occupies only 11 acres along state Highway 9 of the 72-acre Smith Ranch, leaving 61 acres of the meadow untouched.

Commercial use is the most appropriate choice for a site along a busy state highway. The town council has required a design for the grocery store which preserves the view of the “real” open spaces: our mountains and forests.

The population of Silverthorne has been growing at a rapid pace. For the continued economic vitality of the town, it is essential to maintain a balance between residential and commercial uses, between preservation and growth.

Without a property tax to help support this growth, sales tax revenue from a grocery store is very important in maintaining our quality of life. Please vote yes Dec. 9.
