Ophir Mountain Project open house slated for Thursday

SUMMIT COUNTY – White River National Forest officials are holding an open house from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday to discuss the Ophir Mountain Forest Health and Fuels Reduction Project with the interested public at the Summit County Senior and Community Center.

The project proposes treating approximately 1,700 acres of forest south of Frisco to Coyne Valley Road in Breckenridge, with the rough boundaries of Colorado Highway 9 to the east and the base of Ten Mile Range to the west.

Goals of the project include lowering existing and accumulating fuel loads caused by the mountain pine beetle epidemic, expediting regeneration of the forested areas in the Ophir Mountain area, improving scenery and recreation over the long term and salvaging dead and dying lodgepole pine to help offset treatment costs.

The project includes, among other items, selective clear cutting, piling and burning slash and debris, vegetation regeneration, creation and restoration of roads to access treatment areas and obliteration of roads once work is complete.

Comments on the proposed action should be submitted by Nov. 1. They can be addressed to Jan Cutts, Dillon District Ranger, c/o Peech Keller, P.O. Box 620, Silverthorne, Colorado 80498 or e-mailed to wrnf_scoping_comments@fs.fed.us.
