Optimist Club announces oratorical winners

Thirty-nine young people from Summit County competed in this year’s Summit-Lake Dillon Optimist Club Oratorical Contest. The contest was open to anyone aged 15 and under. This year’s topic was “My Future Is Bright Because …”Seventeen finalists were selected from the original 39 entries. The finalists from Breckenridge Elementary School were Emily Flint, Madison Gross, Brett Huntley, Netasha Lavato, Vivian Rennie, Wolf Edberg, Nathan Hausman, Liam Kilgore and Dillon Mitchell. From Upper Blue Elementary School Julia Barry and Forrest Webster made the finals. Summit County Christian School had three students in the finals – Hope Sharr, John Edelmon, and Kyle Vanderkooi. Frisco Elementary School’s finalist was Mackenzie Rogers and Logan Weinman represented Summit Cove Elementary School in the finals. Summit Middle School’s finalist was Elizabeth Lazo.Three girls and three boys were selected by the judges as this year’s top winners. In the girls division, Emily Flint was the first-place winner, Madison Gross took second and Netasha Lavato received the third-place award. For the boys, Kyle Vanderekooi took first place, Wolf Edberg took second place and Nathan Hausman received third place.Emily Flint and Kyle Vanderkooi will represent the Optimist Club at the district competition on May 20 in Longmont when they compete against winners from all the other clubs throughout Colorado and Wyoming. The award for the winners at the district contest is a $1,500 college scholarship.
