Our Future Summit to host panel discussion Thursday on big boxes

SUMMIT COUNTY – The impending arrival of a new big box retail development has sent shivers down the collective spine of many a small town in Colorado. Summit County will be able to get an idea of how other towns around the state have managed big-box challenges and opportunities Thursday, when Cathy Shull and Brian Sipes join in a panel discussion in Frisco, organized as part of Our Future Summit’s regular monthly meeting. Shull is a former executive director of the Fort Morgan-area Chamber of Commerce, where she tried to accommodate both the interests of local merchants and the Super Wal-Mart that located to the edge of town. Sipes sits on the Avon Town Council, the beachhead of big-box development in the mountains, and has direct experience with planning and architectural design for retail facilities. Sipes will discuss Avon’s recent experience with Wal-Mart and Home Depot and present strategies on how communities can use architectural design standards to mitigate the more typical feel of suburban sprawl presented by most big-box development. Our Future Summit is hoping for a big turnout at the meeting, noting in a press release the potential communitywide impacts of an impending big-box development proposal in Frisco. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Flo Raitano. The meeting is from 7-9 p.m. at the Frisco Recreation Building at 110 S. Third Ave.
