KEYSTONE – The next time you go to a concert, count it as a class in music appreciation. That’s what the members of Outformation do. Collectively, the three musicians from Atlanta have attended thousands of live shows in the last 20 years, and they count the time spent as a massive musical education.

Bassist Grady Upchurch describes it as “learning through osmosis.”He, guitarist Sam Holt and drummer Lee Schwartz began Outformation in 2002. The band – whose roots lie in Southern rock – draws its influences from Widespread Panic, Gov’t Mule and the Marshall Tucker Band. Its name comes from a tongue-in-cheek nod to Col. Bruce Hampton’s idea of “going out,” or exploring music while not taking yourself too seriously. It also plays on the word “outformation,” which means “the process of leading the mind away from itself.”

And that’s what the band does as it expands music in different directions.”There’s a higher goal than just going from D to A, and a lot should be said about giving what you’ve got to get to that higher place,” Holt said. “We try to use our songs as vehicles to do that … some journeys are longer than others.”The musicians snatch word fragments from overheard conversations, random television programs and late-night hotel jams.

“The songwriting is not about the meaning of life, but, then again, I wanted to leave it vague enough so that it’s left open for interpretation,” Schwartz said.Outformation plays Saturday at the Goat in Keystone.Kimberly Nicoletti can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 245, or at knicoletti@summitdaily.com.
