Overdue hiker located deceased on Conundrum Creek Trail in Pitkin County

On Thursday at 11 a.m., according to a press release, the Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center received a call about a 78-year-old overdue hiker. According to the caller, the individual had planned to hike the Conundrum Creek Trail the previous morning and had not been heard from since. Deputies responded to the Conundrum Creek Trailhead and located the hiker’s vehicle.  

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of Mountain Rescue Aspen, according to the press release. Twenty three Mountain Rescue Aspen volunteer rescuers were involved in the operation to locate the overdue hiker. After searching for approximately one hour, rescuers located the hiker deceased off the trail approximately one mile from the trailhead.   

This incident is still under investigation by the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office and the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.
