Panel reviews Colorado’s education landscape

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DENVER ” A panel of national experts asked to evaluate Colorado’s education landscape says the state is on track in some areas but has work to do in others.

The study, funded by the nonprofit, Denver-based Piton Foundation, found that Colorado is moving in the right direction in developing a statewide academic growth model that tracks individual students and the effort to update standards.

But the panel says the state has a long way to go when it comes to improving education quality and aligning funding with individual student needs.

Gov. Bill Ritter has pledged to cut the dropout rate in half, narrow the achievement gap and increase the number of college graduates. The panel says those goals are worthy but may not be realistic.

The panel included Stanford University professor Michael Kirst, and Andrew Rotherham, co-director of the independent think tank Education Sector.
