Paslay: Lack of communication, planning on Dam Road closure

Tom Paslay, Frisco

Once again there appears to be a lack of communication and joint planning between The Denver Water Board and the Summit County Planning Dept. I refer to the unbelievably poor decision to close the Dillon Dam Road and Bike path during one of the peak visitor months of summer rather than wait until the shoulder season in Sept. to complete this one month project. (and don’t use the excuse of a projected Sept. blizzard … asphalt is about 200 degrees out of the hopper).

On August 1, we attempted to get from Frisco to Silverthorne on I-70 only to find traffic stopped eastbound from the Frisco exist. We then attempted to get to Silverthorne via Swan Mtn. … that too was blocked bumper to bumper by some project (which we never did see). It took us a half hour to get around the lake. All it will take to bring every travel option around the lake to standstill is the inevitable traffic accident at the eastbound Silverthorne exit.

The one good thing about part of the work being done is correcting the poor design decision to put those big yellow stanchions on both sides of the bike path, thus inviting collisions at the funnel point. They are now going to replace the twin stanchions with a single stanchion in the middle of the path. Good thinking …at last. But why do they have to close the entire path to correct this problem? Let bikers and hikers walk around that portion of the path.
