Peak 8 opening day shows Breckenridge doesn’t get it

To Roger McCarthy and Adam Aron: Wow, opening day at Peak 8, what a mess!

Hello, is anybody there? Obviously Vail Resorts is not. If it was, it would have seen huge lift lines at the Colorado SuperChair and no lines at the Rocky Mountain SuperChair. Why? Because the Rocky Mountain Chair was not open.

OK, so let’s go to Peak 9. Well don’t count on E-chair, because even at 10:30 a.m., it was not open.

Now, how about that new glamour lift, the Peak 8 SuperConnect that connects from the base of Peak 9 to Peak 8? Again, not running.

We didn’t even make it to Peak 9 because, rumor has it, many lifts over there were also not open.

For years, you have made snow early in the season because you say the visitors want it. Now, the snow came naturally and early, and Breckenridge still seems to be the last to open the ski area and lifts.

Your little money-saving idea of staggering the lift openings was in reality, a bad idea. Out-of-towners were asking us what was going on. Why weren’t lifts running? How come this seems so difficult? When we told them of Vail Resorts’ money-saving scheme, they were disgusted.

How can you ask the Forest Service for more terrain with the excuse of overcrowded slopes and then turn around and keep existing terrain closed causing this exact problem: overcrowded slopes and lift lines.

As one local put it, “I am tired of Breckenridge (ski area) being the bastard stepchild.” Vail Resorts, give us a break. Stop worrying about what you don’t own, and start worrying about what you do. A world-class experience can go both ways. Today, it sucked.
