Pedestrian bridges bad; parking garages good

Carol TrautscholdBreckenridge

As a homeowner in Breckenridge for 25 years, I am very interested in the plans for Main Street. Unfortunately, I will not be here for the Feb. 1 presentation by Design Workshop Aspen or the charrette, so I am writing to express opinions on four aspects of the plan mentioned in the Jan. 24 article. Elevating pedestrian crosswalks on Main Street is an extremely bad idea for two reasons. One is they will be eyesores, and out of character in a Victorian setting. Who ever heard of elevated crosswalks in a Victorian mining town? The other is that few visitors want to climb stairs at 9,600 feet.Is the town going to build parking garages? People want to come to Main Street for shopping, eating and seeing special attractions. Where are they supposed to park?Making Main Street more pedestrian-friendly implies the town is going to restrict parking on that street. People with small children do not always want to walk to shop or to go to dinner or wait for buses in the cold, so they prefer driving. Parking near the attractions of Main Street is essential. I doubt that street furniture will be used very much in the winter, so the town is considering spending money on amenities which will be used for about three months a year.Linking Main Street to the Riverwalk Center should be a nonissue. They are only a block away from each other. People walk from one to the other very easily now.
