People still don’t get that West is in throes of a drought

Just a short reply to Brian and Annette O’Harra, who complained in a Feb. 11 letter about restrictions on water in the Heaton Bay Campground, which might impact their normal vacation plans.

Like so many other out of state visitors, these folks don’t seem to understand the severity of the drought in Colorado.

Tens of thousands of Colorado residents will each lose hundreds or thousands of dollars that they have invested in landscaping because of the drought in 2003.

According to a recent article in the Rocky Mountain News, thousands of people will (or already have lost) jobs working for landscaping and lawn maintenance companies, some of which may go out of business.

Most importantly, hundreds or thousands of farmers may lose most or all of their livelihood because of the drought. State, county and town officials and employees will work many hours to identify and implement water conservation programs.

Even the manufacturers of lawn maintenance equipment will see a decline in the sale of their products, and so on and so on.

By comparison, the O’Harras’ complaint is minuscule. They should look at the bigger picture and realize that they are just two more names added to Mother Nature’s already huge list of those who will sustain financial losses and have to make changes in their lives because of her lack of generosity with precipitation in a huge section of the Western USA.
