Peter Bowen: Dam barrier update:

Peter Bowen

While approaching the dam recently I observed an RV motor across the dam unchallenged and unperturbed. Being perturbed myself, I doubled back to the one security employee on duty who was busy reading the paper in his Denver Water security vehicle and asked what the deal was with RV going across the dam. Here is what I learned:

– The barriers have not been active all this time, so for all of us who have been cringing as we cross the barriers, that was just rehearsal; we go live soon!

– Denver Water, I was told, cannot stop anyone from crossing the dam because, as security, they would be arrested for impersonating a law enforcement officer.

– The dam barriers will be going live soon, just as soon as the emergency agencies in the county have their key cards and are satisfied that everything is working to their satisfaction.

– Height sensors, much like the sensors at the Eisenhower and Johnson tunnels, will activate the barriers.

I am sure we all remember the picture of the hapless victim of the dam accidental barrier popup. Now with sensors to trigger them, who knows what will happen. Perhaps the Rotary Club can have another event besides the ice melt guess.
