Peter Drummond: Pheromones not entirely safe

Peter Drummond, Biobalance Inc.

I read, with great interest “Treating trees minus the harsh chemicals” business review of Beetle Blockers (SDN Bizline feature, June 22). The first paragraph states: “It is safe for kids, pets, our water supply as well as birds and woodland creatures” and continues to imply that pheromone application is “safe for kids.” Statements such as these may be misleading.

The product label for BeetleBlock-Verbenone clearly states, “Keep out of reach of children.” If you or your children get this product on skin or clothing, swallow it, or get in eyes, call a poison control center as stated on the label or call 800-262-8200 for emergency medical treatment information. Environmental hazard information is also included on product label.

I am very familiar with this product and have utilized it for three seasons as part of an integrated pest management program which employs spraying, pheromone applications, and many other techniques to defend against mountain pine beetle. Sprayed trees, by the way, are safe to touch when the spray has dried, according to product label.

Please be thoughtful and responsible when using these or any other pesticides. Consult a licensed professional or refer to credible sources for information, but always read and follow pesticide label instruction; it is federal law!
