Planners approve gondola in Breck

BRECKENRIDGE ” The Breckenridge Planning Commission unanimously approved Vail Resort’s plans for the Cucumber Creek gondola which will sweep skiers from in-town parking lots to the bases of Peaks 7 and 8.

The vote came after little discussion among commissioners who approved the project on first reading last month.

Resort officials made changes to the architecture at the base station near the transit center at Watson Lot by building a structure over the machinery. They also gave the facade a more barn-like appearance with post and beam on the outside and a concrete plaza rather than one using crushed road base.

“It’s more appropriate for the town,” said commissioner Ken Boos. “Everything’s been hammered out. It actually looks pretty nice.”

The gondola is one part of myriad improvements Vail Resorts, owner of the Breckenridge Ski Resort, wants to make to their base area on Peak 9. The gondola was proposed to move people rapidly onto the mountain and relieve vehicle congestion on Ski Hill Road.

According to lift director Jon Mauch, to cut costs, ski resort officials have decided to utilize eight-passenger cabins rather than the originally planned-for 12-person cabins.

As part of the project, the ski resort will also build a “skyway-skiway,” a ski trail that brings skiers from the Four O’clock ski run on Peak 8, through the forest, over a bridge near Hunt Placer Inn to the in-town parking lots.

The gondola plans now go to the town council for approval.
