Planning group names Udall legislator of 2002

DENVER – American Planning Association officials named U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., Legislator of the Year for his leadership in planning and smart growth legislation.

APA officials cited various resolutions and bills Udall has sponsored, including an urban sprawl and smart growth study, open space proposals and the Remote Sensing Applications, which allows communities to obtain information from satellites to address growth, homeland security and forest fire management.

The urban sprawl bill would use the National Environmental Policy Act to give local communities greater power in identifying, reviewing and addressing federal actions or projects that may have an impact on urban growth and sprawl.

The group also praised Udall for his co-chairmanship of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus and for championing full funding for clean-energy programs and innovative transportation solutions.

Udall also will be honored at the APA legislative conference in Washington, D.C. May 11-13.
