FINAL UPDATE: Police use shields, armored vests to approach suspect, arrest him following stand-off in Safeway parking lot in Frisco
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct that the suspect’s vehicle was pinned between a Frisco Police Department vehicle and Summit County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.
11:25 a.m.: Police fired chemical munitions as they used shields and armored vests to approach the suspect and arrest him. The man is now in custody.
10:58 a.m.: The stand-off is still ongoing. Officers have stopped using the megaphone to communicate with the suspect for the past 20 minutes.
10:26 a.m.: Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said officers are currently working through a “surrender plan.”
10:25 a.m.: Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons says officers have been able to identify two knives but have not seen a gun, though the suspect self reported being in possession of one. The pickup truck has turned on its engine.
10:20 a.m.: Videos shot between 9-10 a.m. show officers working to negotiate with the suspect.
10:15 a.m.: Jaime FitzSimons said law enforcement won’t be leaving the scene until the stand-off is resolved. Law enforcement say they suspect that the man is intoxicated.
“He’s a safety risk to the public. … He’s demonstrated that he’s armed and he’s not surrendering even after hours of negotiation with SMART,” FitzSimons said.
Loud music is playing from the truck as officers try to negotiate with the suspect.
10:12 a.m.: “In order to provide police and the Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team (S.M.A.R.T.) more room to do their work, Highway 9 will be closed immediately from 10 Mile Drive, where Taco Bell is located on that corner, to Dillon Dam Road,” town of Frisco communications director Vanessa Agee said in a statement. “The detour around this area will utilize 10 Mile Drive and Dillon Dam Road. Lusher Court is also closed, and the Basecamp shopping area, where Whole Foods is located, should only be accessed by using Hawn Drive to Meadow Court to Basecamp Way.”
10:10 a.m.: “The man is claiming to have weapons, including knives and a gun and is refusing to leave his vehicle,” according to a statement from the town of Frisco. “The Safeway parking lot has been closed to protect the public and allow police and mental health professionals the space to deescalate this situation.”
9:55 a.m.: The Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team is continuing to negotiate with the suspect, Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said. The incident began around 7 a.m., he said.
9:42 a.m.: Officers told the suspect that if they don’t comply with commands that law enforcement will use chemical munitions.
9:30 a.m.: Law enforcement officers have a black pickup truck pinned between a Frisco Police Department vehicle and a Summit County Sheriff’s Office vehicle. Police have been using a megaphone to speak with the suspect, as a few officers have their weapons trained at the pickup.
“We want to resolve this peacefully,” an officer said over the megaphone. “Drop your weapons and come out with your hands in the air.”
9 a.m.: The town of Frisco has confirmed an ongoing police incident near the Safeway supermarket off of Summit Boulevard.
Frisco Communications Director Vanessa Agee said police are actively working the scene and more details will be provided when available. The public should avoid the area.
