Police will be "carding’ youths

Reid Williams

SILVERTHORNE – Beginning Monday, when police officers begin approaching young people, they won’t necessarily be handing out tickets – they’ll probably be handing out baseball cards.

The Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police and the Colorado Rockies joined forces to print a special set of trading cards featuring the 2002 baseball team and its mascot, Dinger. Silverthorne officers will distribute the cards to children while on patrol and performing other duties in town.

“We’ve got a stash of about 400 cards here already and, hopefully, kids will be able to put together a whole set by the end of the summer,” said Verna Pottle, administrative assistant at the police department. “Even if they’re not into baseball, kids like “stuff.’ And this is a great way for the officers to establish positive relations with youth.”

In addition to the player information found on typical baseball cards – such as the player’s position, batting average and career statistics – these cards contain messages such as “Drugs ruin dreams – just say no!” and “Para sobresalir, hay que leer” (“Read to succeed,” in Spanish).

Pottle said the card campaign was done in past years, but disappeared in 2001 for lack of a sponsor to cover the printing costs. The Silverthorne Recreation Center also will be distributing the cards, she said.
