Polis announces recovery funds for Head Start programs

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jared Polis announced recently that over $690,000 has been awarded to six Head Start programs serving Colorado’s Second Congressional District by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Head Start is a federally funded child development program that serves low-income students and their families. Since its inception in 1965, Head Start has helped prepare over 25 million preschool aged children for kindergarten through comprehensive education, health, nutrition and parent-involvement services.

“Expanding access to Head Start is one of the best possible investments our nation can make for its future,” Polis said. “For every $1 our society invests in quality early childhood education, we realize up to $17 in returns through improved earnings and employment and decreased welfare dependency, crime, and grade repetition. One of the most important lessons I learned on the Colorado State Board of Education was the key role early education programs play in a child’s development. Programs like Head Start prime our children for a lifetime of learning and achievement. I am proud to have helped secure additional funding through the Recovery Act for Head Start and will continue to fight to expand and strengthen its services in our communities.”

These grants will allow Head Start to adjust to cost-of-living increases and higher operating costs and to improve program quality and teacher and staff training. This funding was made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which Polis worked to enact earlier this year.
