Polis, FitzGerald, Shafroth race to the finish

George: I respect you for not attempting to attack Jared Polis as a person while extolling the virtues of your favorite candidate, Joan Fitz-Gerald. I appreciate that up to this point both campaigns have taken the “high road”.

It appeared, however, that you were so busy excoriating his money that you missed the point about how he earned it and the history of the social causes he spends it on. I hope you see it as positive that he is a millionaire, and yet is a Democrat who walks precincts in support of fellow Democratic candidates, and is seeking election to serve the people, not the system. Joan is a fine person and, with a long life as a politician, has shown that she indeed can work within the system to produce results.

I campaigned previously for Joan in Summit County. This election year I have been inspired by Barack Obama to look outside the familiar political circles in search of up-and-coming leaders of the future. I feel fortunate to have found someone as outstanding as Jared Polis in that search. That said, if your Joan wins the primary election, I’ll support the hell out of her. And I will do the same for the other quality opponent in this primary race ” Will Shafroth ” were he to win the nomination.

You seem unaware of the extent to which Jared Polis, at his young age of 34, has achieved a formidable record of social service. In case you were unsure, Jared Polis does not come from wealth; I would guess of possibly your present circumstances.

With immigrant grandparents, and encouraged by politically activist parents, starting back in high school he made his money through innovative thinking and by inventing commerce on the Internet; something beyond the comprehension of most persons of our ages George ” certainly beyond my own. The fact that he has shared that earned wealth with others of less than modest means ” and in most remarkable ways ” is a testament to his character.

Funding a congressional race is very, very expensive. I had mentioned Fitz-Gerald’s financial support from industry donors not to challenge her character, but to remind people that all large donors come calling after the election. I like to think that she, and of course Jared Polis, as well as Will Shafroth ” another candidate of character who is free from corporate donors ” can honor their pledges to avoid being influenced by lobbyists of all persuasions.

You are correct in asserting that Polis has no legislative accomplishments upon which to hang his hat. His accomplishments have occurred in the world where he has had nothing but his creative intellect and his integrity to propel him to the front of the pack.

I personally want to see him put those attributes to use in the U. S. House of Representatives. His record indicates that we will benefit as a society if he gets that opportunity.

Thank you, George, for challenging me to bring additional clarity to this important contest.
