Politicians or telemarketers?

Gordon F. Lilly, Silverthorne

A couple of years ago in Colorado, it was impossible to get through dinner without one or two telephone calls from telemarketeering pests. Finally, in response to public pressure, a law was passed that permitted us to prevent these constant interruptions. For some months we were able to dine in peace. But when passing the law, our politicians had carefully exempted themselves from its provisions. That is par for the course. I remember when Congress enacted a statute which outlawed discrimination in the workplace – except, of course, in our representatives’ own offices. So now, as we approach an election, we find that we are bombarded over the phone with recorded hype from candidates of both parties and polling surveys from their staff. Now we can, of course, hang up on the politicians. If we wish we can even insult their polling lackeys. I myself was interrupted tonight while cooking by one such, who addressed me in Spanish. Now I happen to know a little of el idioma including des grosserias. So, considering that she was working immorally for some political pimp, you can imagine how I addressed her.But it is not enough that we can respond to political rudeness, if necessary in kind. As citizens we should be able hold our political representatives and their opponents at least to the current standards of the other despicable telemarketers and keep them, too, from invading our homes.
