Post office boxes should be free

I guess I never thought about it before, but as a homeowner, why should I have to pay for a post office box when no mail delivery is offered?

The U.S. Postal Service expends its dollars for employees, trucks, gasoline, etc., to deliver the mail to others.

Why should I have to pay for box when I have to expend my time, energy, gasoline, etc., to drive to the post office to pick up the mail myself because no delivery to my house is offered?

The fee was about $12 or $13 some 10 years ago and has now about tripled to $36. The annual fee is not a problem, but why should any citizen have to pay a box fee when no postal service delivery is available to them?
