Prepare an emergency plan for your pets

Nancy RingSummit County Animal Control and ShelterFrisco

I am writing prior to any formal debriefing to pass an important message along to all of our community. Thanks to the quick and diligent response of our emergency fire responders; we all got lucky. I can’t tell you how much the calls of people and agencies volunteering to help us at Animal Control were appreciated. Had the animal shelter itself been evacuated, I can’t tell you just how much we would need that help. What I want most to convey at this point is that everyone must have an individual evacuation plan. Most people with animals affected by this small and quickly contained forest fire for the most part had their plans to evacuate in order. They either exercised that plan before the shelter even got the call of the fire, evacuated cleanly and quickly, or at least made their needs known to seek assistance. It all became quickly clear that, had the shelter facility been in need of evacuation, our ability to respond to help everyone else would have been painfully delayed in order to remove the animals from the shelter building to the safety of a neighboring county shelter. Please, please, if you have animals – do the drill ahead of time. The shelter has FREE information pamphlets about being prepared in disaster situations. We are happy to mail you one upon request, if you cannot stop by to pick one up.
