President Truman saved lives with WWII decision to use the atomic bomb

Henry W. Kircher, Dillon Valley

In answer to Sue Carr-Novotny’s letter of Sept. 16, it is the same story for people 50 years after the fact and who have no idea what the world was like when President Harry Truman made the wise decision to use the atomic bomb to end the war with Japan.

The implication is if President Truman had not used the bomb, we would not be the “only nation to use nuclear weapons.”

What is always forgotten is that it was Japan that started the war on Dec. 7, 1941, and the slaughter of millions ended in August 1945.

Thousands of men and women in the services would not have lived to see a new day. it seems to me, we owe a thank-you to President Truman for this courage, and make sure the facts are weighed before judgment is passed.
