Priest sentenced to 18 years to life in sex-assault cases

GOLDEN – A former parish priest could spend 18 years to life in prison after he was convicted of molesting two teenage boys, one who had gone to him for counseling, prosecutors said Thursday.Timothy Joseph Evans, 44, was convicted of sexual assault in two Colorado parishes. The cases were handled separately and he was ordered to serve the two sentences consecutively.On Thursday, a Jefferson County district judge sentenced him to four years in prison on one count of sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust.Prosecutors said the victim was a 16-year-old whose parents had sent him to Evans for counseling in 1996 at the Spirit of Christ Parish in the Denver suburb of Arvada. He was convicted in March.On Wednesday, a Larimer County district judge sentenced Evans to 14 years to life in on two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and one count of sexual assault on a child with a pattern of abuse.In that case, prosecutors said Evans inappropriately touched a 17-year-old parishioner on two occasions while serving as priest at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Fort Collins, 50 miles north of Denver. Evans was a parish priest there from 1998 to 2002.He was convicted in that case in April.Evans was removed from parish ministry in Fort Collins in 2002 and was barred from serving publicly as a priest in 2003.In a written statement issued after Evans was sentenced in the Fort Collins case, Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput said, “I deeply regret the pain that these damaging events have caused.”
