Primary votes now official

Jane Stebbins

BRECKENRIDGE – Seven provisional votes were cast in the Aug. 13 election, but they weren’t enough to change the outcome of any of the races, elections administrator Vicky Stecklein said Tuesday.

That means County Treasurer Larry Gilliland, Sheriff Joe Morales and County Clerk and Recorder Cheri Brunvand all will return to office, and Joanne Richardson will replace Dave Joslin as coroner in January.

Morales and Brunvand ran uncontested in the Republican primary and will run uncontested in the November election. Richardson and Gilliland defeated their opponents in the Republican primary and will run uncontested in the November election.

Provisional votes are filed by people who moved to Summit County from another precinct in Colorado and failed to register by the deadline 30 days before the election. To vote, such voters must apply for a provisional ballot on Election Day and vote in their new precinct. After the election, officials must call to verify that the voter was properly registered beforehand.

The seven votes didn’t change the outcome of the primary elections because the narrowest spread was 26 votes. Ballot canvassing is complete and the election results are official, Stecklein said.

Of the 15,206 active voters, 1,216 voted, she said. However, she must report to the state the percentage of eligible voters – some 9,000 of whom have moved away and whose names are on the rolls for four to six years.
