Proposed Silverthorne Elementary School put in the wrong location

Next Wednesday, the Silverthorne Town Council will consider and vote on the proposed land exchange for a new elementary school.

We are encouraging everyone who has an interest in this subject to please attend. We have serious reservations regarding this vote. The proposed location right on Highway 9 is irresponsible – how many grade schools in the U.S. are located along a major highway? The distance from the core of our town and families discourages our children from walking and riding bikes to school – this seems contradictory to a place that calls itself Colorado’s playground.

No traffic signal or sidewalk connections are planned, in total disregard for the safety of our children. Neighbors have said this is the windiest snow-blown corridor in the town. Finally, the taxpayers’ costs for servicing this site are much greater than some sites already identified.

This is a 100-year decision we are making, and we encourage everyone, whatever your point of view, to attend the town council meeting on Wednesday. There are other fantastic and exciting options, and yes, they will take some time and energy to pursue. Please come and tell the council and school board that as elected officials, we want them to spend the time and energy to do the right thing for our children and future children of our community.
