Questions 5A, 5B needed to provide affordable housing

I am writing in support of ballot questions 5A and 5B, which would provide much-needed funds for affordable housing for residents of Summit County through the Summit Housing Authority.

I have been a resident of Summit County for the past 6-1/2 years, and I own and run a small acupuncture and chinese herb clinic on Main Street in Breckenridge.

For the past four years, I have lived in a small studio condo in Breckenridge with my 4-year-old son, Skylar. I am a single parent with no outside financial support and depend on the success of my business, community resources and creativity to make a living in an expensive area.

As my son grew, I realized the need for more living space and began to search through real estate listings.

The housing for which we potentially qualified was depressing, to say the least, with no space for a young, active child to run and play.

It was a disheartening process, especially in light of the fact my business has been successful and remained quite busy over the years. I feel that natural health care is an essential resource for our community, and each patient that enters my office a gift to me.

I love the mountains of Summit County, the small town community, the freedom to move and grow, my friends and my work. But I also want to be able to provide a place for me and my son to call home.

The housing authority has provided an invaluable resource for many locals here in Summit County. Last July I moved into a townhouse in Gibson Heights in Breckenridge and have a nice place to call home, with even some room for a small yard.

I feel I have been given the opportunity to put my roots in here even deeper, and I have the housing authority to thank for providing much-needed housing options for locals like me who work year round in our community.

My neighbors are teachers, county employees, City Market employees, ski area employees, small business owners, artists, families, single parents, young couples, single folks – people who love it here and make a difference in our community.

Take this opportunity to make a difference in our community, and please vote yes on 5A and 5B.
