Rafting nat’ls held today on Arkansas

RYAN SLABAUGHsummit daily news

BUENA VISTA – Ron Burke’s been there before. He’s fallen in the water, seen his raft go by him, and knows his team can react. At the recent FIBArk Whitewater Festival in Salida, Burke’s local rafting temam – Pinchie Time – swam while in the lead, but rebounded and finished third in the sprint, giving them a good story to tell and plenty of momentum heading into today’s U.S. Rafting Nationals.Pinchie Time, along with teams from all over the country, will tackle The Numbers section of the Arkansas River, which is just north of the commercial-heavy Brown’s Canyon near Buena Vista. It’s a new location, as most Nationals have been held in Gore Canyon. “It’s still a gathering of the biggest and best whitewater enthusiasts in the country, kayaking and rafting,” Burke said. “The water is still high.”The race starts today at 5 p.m. Burke will be joined by Winter Park guides Paul Renfro and Jason Enloe, as well as Summit locals Joe Sailiano, John Anicito and Bob Sisti.Ryan Slabaugh can be contacted at (970) 668-3998, ext. 13600, or at rslabaugh@summitdaily.com
