It’s just after 7:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, and Butterhorn Bakery‘s cozy dining room is already filling with customers. Visitors scan the menu full of homemade breakfast fare, waiters chat with each other while hustling to place orders, and long-time manager Eko Wiono greets customers with a handshake at their tables. The restaurant has only been open for a few minutes, and it’s already buzzing with a happy energy.

For over 40 years, Butterhorn Bakery has been welcoming guests like family, and it helped the beloved establishment to win Best Brunch in the 2024 Best of Summit contest along with finalist honors for Best Wedding Cakes & Deserts, Best Baked Goods and Best Breakfast.

Children are doted on with free cookies like they’re at grandma’s, and lucky customers get a big hug from Sally Ting, who can’t seem to contain her excitement that they’re here. This is, after all, a family affair.

Eko Wiono and his wife, Sally Ting, have been managing Butterhorn Bakery since 2010. Their teen boys, Jesse and Jayden, are often in the café to lend a hand when school’s out.

“I treat my employees like family, too,” Wiono said.

Three of his employees have been at the restaurant for 20 years, and four have been there for 15.

“We’re happy to see each other,” Wiono added.

The staff’s energy spills over into the diner’s experience. When asked what makes Butterhorn so special, Wiono said “the atmosphere.”

He added, “Of course, the food is good.”

Almost everything served is made on-site. The cinnamon French toast, made with the restaurant’s freshly-baked bread, is a popular choice with customers, as is the Eggs Butterhorn, a type of eggs Benedict made with a house-made sauce, according to Wiono. Local businesses also keep the cafe busy with catering orders of breakfast wraps and coffee for meetings, Wiono said.

Butterhorn Bakery is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., seven days a week. Breakfast is served until 11:30 a.m., and most dishes cost about $17. Lunch, which includes a long list of sandwiches, salads and griddle items, is served until 2:30 p.m.. Most plates cost around $19. Customers with allergies to wheat will find they can enjoy almost all the menu options with gluten-free bread. Children enjoy a menu made just for them, with specialty plates like “mouse cakes.” Guests in a hurry can order menu items as well as delectable pastries displayed behind a glass case from the to-go counter. And if anyone falls in love with those quirky salt-and-pepper shakers on the table, sets are available for purchase.

Outdoor seating helps Butterhorn serve the many customers who line up at their door from mid-June to mid-October. Brides and grooms-to-be can order elegant, custom cakes from the bakery.
