REAL Project is the real thing

Elizabeth Edgar LoweREAL Project coordinator

In response to Libby Dogget’s Aug. 2 letter “Ensuring quality early education:” First, let me applaud her acknowledgment of the need for quality early childhood education and the need for qualified teachers. The Summit early childhood community welcomes and encourages the much-needed discussion about the importance of education for children birth to age 5.I just want to clarify two points about the Reading Early Always Learning (REAL) Project. The REAL Project is a collaborative effort of Summit County’s Early Childhood Options and the Early Childhood Council – not Summit Cove Elementary School.Early Childhood Options is a nonprofit early childhood agency serving all of Summit County. The project is the result of an Early Learning Opportunity Act grant from the Federal Child Care Bureau. The REAL Project has many goals, one being professional development for early childhood professionals. The goal of REAL Scholarship Program is to help early childhood educators begin or continue academic pursuits in Early Childhood Education. Scholarship money can only be accessed if an educator is working toward a Colorado Early Childhood Professional Credential and/or a degree in early childhood education. We have two scholarship recipients working on their master’s degrees in the field. With the help of Colorado Mountain College, we have been able to assist educators who want to begin a degree by taking classes locally. We agree with Ms. Dogget’s assessment that “the early childhood education community must begin immediately to move more teachers toward gaining their four-year bachelor’s degrees.” The REAL Project is helping Summit County do just that.
