Recognize the lifesaving system

Sean M. Caffrey

We would like to thank your publication and Jane Stebbins for your reporting of the lifesaving use of an automated defibrillator by the Red, White and Blue Fire District on March 23. While the fire district deserves congratulations for responding quickly and effectively to the needs of its community, a number of other private and public entities came together to provide outstanding emergency health care on the evening of March 21. The call began with a 911 call to the medically trained dispatchers of the Summit County Communications Center, who ensured the response of fire and ambulance units to the scene.

The rapid and effective response, by mostly Colorado Mountain College-trained emergency medical technicians of the Red, White and Blue, provided the initial lifesaving treatment. Professional paramedics from the Summit County Ambulance Service then followed up that care with critical advanced interventions until the arrival of the critical care nurse and paramedic flight team from Flight For Life.

The flight team maintained this high level of care until the patient was delivered to the intensive care unit at Presbyterian/St. Luke1s Hospital in Denver for specialized care within two hours of the 911 call. This level of emergency care occurred because everyone in the emergency medical services system performed his or her function, on cue, with precision and skill.

Our community should celebrate the accomplishments of the entire system and be proud of the people throughout our system who work day and night to ensure the health and welfare of our community.
