Recycling fund raiser honors activist

BRECKENRIDGE – The 14th annual Tim McClure Memorial Benefit for Summit Recycling Project (SRP) set for today honors a local activist and recycling hero who made his home in Summit County.

McClure started the Summit Recycling Project (SRP) in 1976 as a nonprofit, educational, experimental organization to promote resource recovery and reduce wastefulness.

“It’s an honor to work for an organization with such deep roots in the recycling movement,” said SRP’s executive director Carly Wier. “Tim and his Waste-Not Miners – many of whom still live in Summit County – went so far as to file a mining claim on the local landfill to prove a point about the value of the materials we throw away every day.”

The annual event raises funds for the nonprofit recycling program’s operating budget but also honors the history of the organization through a photo compilation and timeline.

“It’s more than a fund raiser; it’s a celebration of recycling and of a successful grassroots organization,” Wier said. “It’s a celebration of Tim’s vision and activism.”

The event includes an Italian buffet dinner, entertainment from the Kudzoos and the Mountain Gypsy Belly Dancers and a silent auction.

Part of this year’s event will highlight environmentally friendly products and services in the silent auction.
