In his eighth year at X Games Aspen, Red Gerard won his first gold on Sunday, Jan. 28, in men’s snowboard slopestyle at Buttermilk.

The Silverthorne athlete led after the second round with a 96.33, but put down a near-flawless final run that earned a 97.

After smoothly navigating the rails at the top of the course, Gerard went big on the jumps. He started with a cab double cork 1080, followed by a switch back 1620. On his final air, he nailed a backside 1800.

Gerard completed the same sequence on each pass of the course, improving upon it each time.

“It’s everything. I grew up watching these contests, like X Games and Dew Tour and U.S. Open. To have a gold here means everything to me,” Gerard said after his win. “Just to land three runs, today was perfect. I’m just so happy.”

Through his eight appearances at X Games, Gerard had previously only won a bronze medal in 2020. He won gold in slopestyle at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
