Reece Bowling: Breck gondola lot project a mistake

Denver

I don’t live in Breckenridge but we do visit 10-15 days a year to ski and enjoy the town. I don’t believe a new hotel at the Breckenridge Connect site will improve the community. There are too many rooms in Breckenridge now. Some of the older 1970s properties are in need of remodeling or should be rebuilt. Bringing these properties back up to the community standard would be a much better investment of time and resources.

I support trying to help downtown businesses. But the gondola parking lots are a huge success and have solved some serious parking and traffic problems. They shifted a lot of skiers to Peak 7, and greatly improved Breckenridge by making skiing much more convenient. Yes, day-tripping Denver families like ours park, ski, and generally go home without eating dinner. We do spend money for lunch and sundries. But putting up a hotel and making us ride the shuttle will not cause us to stay and have dinner, either. Assuming the hotel parking structure continues to allow local day parking for reasonable rates, it’s hard to imaging day trippers will start eating downtown when they don’t now.

Downtown Breckenridge is not conducive to value priced family dinning (with the exception of the crepe guy, we eat there a lot). It’s fine for vacationers. We also love to eat there when we’re staying overnight, but it’s out of our normal price range and we’re pretty typical. Bottom line: Locals are not going to eat out often in Breckenridge. Vail Resorts and Breckenridge need to decide if they want to continue to encourage local day traffic or not. Eliminating the easy and inexpensive gondola lots will say a lot about their decision.
