Services set for Patrick Mahany in New York

HORNELL, N.Y. — A memorial service is set in western New York for a decorated Vietnam veteran who was killed earlier this month when his medical helicopter crashed in Colorado.

Calling hours are being held Friday afternoon at a funeral home in Hornell in Steuben County for 64-year-old Patrick Mahany, who grew up in neighboring Arkport. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning at the funeral home.

Authorities say Mahany’s helicopter crashed July 3 shortly after taking off at a medical center in Frisco, Colorado. Two medical workers on board survived.

Mahany was an Army helicopter pilot who flew 1,200 combat hours in Vietnam and survived being shot down three times.

Police, fire and emergency vehicles from New York’s Southern Tier will escort the funeral procession to his burial plot in a local cemetery.
